Moomintroll brings puzzles, watercolor landscapes and a lonely winter to PS5

Winter’s Warmth reaches Sony’s console on September 18. The standalone adventure from Snufkin’s creators explores loneliness beneath its welcoming storybook appearance.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth comes to PS5 on September 18. Developed by Hyper Games, the studio behind Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, it starts with Moomintroll waking before the rest of his hibernating family. Snow has made his familiar home feel strange, and there is nobody awake to reassure him.

This is the PS5 arrival, not the game's original launch. The Steam version has been available since April 27. You can also start here without playing Snufkin. The two adventures stand alone and can be enjoyed in either order.

01

A welcoming world that begins with loneliness

Hyper Games describes a reluctant journey in which Moomintroll initially wants somebody to look after him. Meeting other inhabitants gradually turns that search into helping people who need him instead.

Exploration across the valley, forests and mountains is paired with quests and puzzles. The PlayStation listing confirms a single-player adventure inspired by Tove Jansson's Moominland Midwinter. Familiarity with the books adds recognition, but is not a prerequisite for following this story.

Watercolor scenery with snow that moves

In its PlayStation Blog art breakdown, the team explains how painted 2D elements sit alongside 3D shapes. The aim is to retain the unevenness of watercolor sinking into paper rather than make every surface look perfectly smooth.

Snow works differently. A deformable layer responds to characters moving through the scene, giving it weight and displacement. That lets the world keep its illustrated appearance while the ground reacts to movement.

Who might want to take a look

The premise is a fit for players interested in exploration, puzzles and character-led storytelling. Its cozy presentation does not remove the loneliness or fear that starts the journey. This is a look at the release and its announced design, not our review or a performance assessment of the PS5 version.

For other adventures built around unusual places, we are also following Where the Seeds Fall. Uncanyon takes a different route through environmental puzzles.
