A confirmed date and a different return to Moscow

Metro 2039 launches on February 4, 2027. 4A Games attached that date to the first console gameplay, captured on PS5 Pro. Australia, New Zealand and selected Asian markets receive it on February 5 because of time-zone differences. Pre-orders will open later in 2026. Wishlisting is available now.

This is not a remaster. It is a single-player, story-led adventure starring The Stranger, a former Spartan emerging from the tunnels into thawing Moscow. The demonstration takes place at the fortified Novoreich dam, where radiation, patrols and limited supplies turn every surface trip into a calculation.

What the new gameplay shows

The footage moves between stealth, exploration and gunfights. The Stranger checks his gear to monitor radiation, improvises with a Molotov and switches between the Shatun rifle and Duplet shotgun. The important promise is not a larger armoury. It is the tension of entering hostile ground without knowing how much filter, ammunition or room for error remains.

Metro works best when technology supports that vulnerability. Our explainer on what ray tracing actually changes covers one of the sequel's headline visual features.

Ray tracing and 60fps: what is actually confirmed

4A Games says PS5 and PS5 Pro will support ray tracing, including a dedicated 60fps Performance Mode. That wording matters: it does not say every mode runs at 60fps, nor does it disclose internal resolution, reconstruction or the exact differences between both consoles.

The game again runs on the studio's proprietary 4A Engine. More details about its technology and PS5 features are promised before release. For now, the solid facts are ray tracing on both consoles and a specific 60fps profile.

Why this announcement has a long shelf life

The date is distant enough for this page to remain a useful reference for months. Platform-specific details, editions, price and PC requirements remain unknown. The extent to which its environments will open up after Metro Exodus is also unclear.

Metro 2039 now joins our list of the most anticipated games of 2026 and 2027. What we have seen does not discard the series' identity: atmosphere, survival and physical combat still lead. That familiarity is the appeal.
