The rumor: 20 minutes… that came from a support chat
Let's start with what has half the internet buzzing: that the August 27 look will run 20 minutes. It sounds like a party, and that's why it spread like wildfire. The problem is where the number comes from: a screenshot of a Netflix support chat that a user shared, in which the agent replied that «the event will last approximately 20 minutes». In other words, it's not from Rockstar or a Netflix statement, but from customer service.
And that's where you should hit the brakes, because as Vice warns, that support agent «could be an AI chatbot», which makes the info about as reliable as asking a toaster for the time. To top it off, Spanish-language outlets have circulated a version stretching the figure to 30 minutes. When a rumor can't even agree with itself —is it 20 or 30?—, it means nobody actually has the number.
Who's saying it: auditing the leakers
The rumor didn't come from nowhere, and that's why it stuck. Back in June, DarkViperAU —arguably the biggest unofficial authority on GTA, more obsessive analyst than leaker— already said he expected a gameplay presentation of around 20 minutes. And well-known insider NateTheHate had spent months describing the next trailer as a «meaningful look». Two respected voices aiming high is what lent the Netflix screenshot credibility, not the other way around.
But neither is infallible, and here comes the mandatory skeptical counterweight. Over at Kotaku, Zack Zwiezen bets on something far more down-to-earth: five to seven minutes. His reasoning is hard to argue with: Rockstar trailers historically run about four and a half minutes, and the studio doesn't tend to put on «a 30-minute Nintendo Direct». Translation: the extended look may be, above all, a trailer that's a bit longer than usual.
The only official facts: date, time and Netflix's whim
Against all that conditional, the confirmed part is quick to tell. Rockstar has only said that on August 27 it will show «an extended look» at GTA VI, «the next evolution» of the series —its words, no numbers—. It premieres first on Netflix at 3 PM ET and, according to Forbes, will be exclusive to the platform for six hours before landing free on Rockstar's YouTube channel. Everything else —runtime, whether there's narrated gameplay, whether they show the map— is no man's land.
What does seem off the table is the one piece of news nobody wants: a delay. Rockstar hasn't moved a big game this close to launch, so the video probably won't end with a changed date. My bet (and I'll stake it with a date)
Here's mine, signed: I think the video will run ten or twelve minutes, neither the 20 of the hype nor the five of the skeptics. Rockstar knows it's kept people waiting over a year and that premiering on Netflix calls for something with heft, not a four-minute cut; but from there to a half-hour documentary is a stretch the studio has never made. I'll bet you dinner we'll see real narrated gameplay, not just cinematics.
And the lovely thing is that it checks itself. On the night of August 27 we'll know who was right: if the video runs 20 minutes, DarkViperAU takes the point; if it's five, Kotaku wins; and if I land near ten, dinner's on me. Mark the date, because that night we'll cover it hot.
