Can you refund Steam DLC? The two-hour limit starts with the expansion purchase

For DLC bought from the Steam store, the ordinary refund conditions are a request within fourteen days, less than two hours played in the underlying game since the DLC purchase, and content that has not been consumed, modified or transferred. A hundred hours played before buying the expansion do not automatically disqualify it.

The phrase to watch is underlying game. Steam does not count only time spent in the expansion's area. Playing other parts of the same game after purchasing the DLC can still take you past the ordinary two-hour threshold.

Which hours count?

Imagine buying an expansion on Friday after sixty hours in the base game, then playing for forty minutes on Saturday. Those forty minutes are relevant, not the previous sixty hours. Play another ninety minutes and you have passed two hours since the purchase, even if you never entered the new area.

The official refund policy also excludes certain third-party DLC that irreversibly changes the game. The store must identify those exceptions before purchase. Check the notice rather than assuming every DLC listing has identical conditions.

A store DLC purchase, an in-game transaction and a key bought elsewhere are different categories. Check the receipt and seller. DLC, expansions and season passes can package different content, so a marketing name alone does not establish refund conditions.

Submit the request through Steam Support

Steam's refund instructions start with signing in to the purchasing account, opening Purchases and selecting the transaction. Choose the problem, then the refund request option. The form lets you select the refund destinations available for that purchase.

Give a specific explanation and submit it. You should receive an email confirming submission and a further message when it is processed. Submitting a form is not the same as approval.

Outside the limits, or waiting for the money

Valve allows requests outside the ordinary conditions to be reviewed, but does not guarantee approval. Explain the circumstances without assuming an exception will be granted. The common refund questions recommend a detailed follow-up if you believe a request was handled incorrectly.

The payment waiting period follows approval, not the moment you open the request form. Steam says approved refunds can take up to seven days, with differences between payment methods. Check the request status and chosen destination before treating a missing credit as rejection.
