Capcom announced Mega Man: Dual Override at The Game Awards on December 12, 2025 with a very brief first look. 8 months later, the studio has brought what it officially calls the debut gameplay trailer to Gamescom, a video running for under 2 minutes that gives us a much clearer idea of how it intends to update the classic formula.
The foundations remain intact, with two-dimensional platforming, jumping, shooting and Robot Masters whose attack patterns must be learned, while the difference lies in Custom Chips and the Override System, two connected mechanics that Capcom had named but had not properly explained until now.

How Custom Chips and the Override System work
Custom Chips modify and improve Mega Man's abilities, while Override activates a temporary surge of power. It is like choosing your tools before starting a job: chips prepare the character, while Override appears to be the extra push saved for when everything becomes more difficult.
The footage shows new movement options, including hovering and passing through certain enemies, alongside several visual armour transformations. Capcom has not yet explained how many chips there are, how players obtain them, how many can be equipped at once or whether they can be swapped during a stage, all of which will determine whether the system offers genuine freedom or a more guided set of upgrades.
Customising Mega Man creates more ways to clear a level, but balance will matter because a chip that bypasses too many hazards could undermine the precise design that makes every jump and shot count.
Twinkle Girl debuts and Astro Man returns
The trailer introduces Twinkle Girl, the new Robot Master designated DWN.089, whose fight takes place on top of a dome as fireworks fill the screen with projectiles, continuing the series' tradition of building each boss around one clear visual idea.
Astro Man, the DWN.058 who debuted in Mega Man 8 in 1997, also returns under the name Astro Man R. What is certain is that Dual Override will combine new characters with at least one returning Robot Master.

Proto Man is back, but is he playable?
‘This time, he is not alone. Proto Man joins the Blue Bomber,’ Capcom says in its official description, which places both characters at the centre of the Robot Exhibition incident and together in the new key art. What it does not confirm is whether players can control Proto Man or whether he only participates in the story. The trailer contains no gameplay footage of him.
The word Dual in the title and the focus on both characters make a second playable hero plausible, but for now that is only a possibility. Capcom may simply be saving the surprise for a later presentation.
Capcom has also confirmed a Mega Man skin pack for Pragmata before the end of 2026. The collaboration began as an April Fools' Day joke and will now become actual in-game content.
Mega Man: Dual Override launches in 2027, with no specific month announced, for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. Pricing and pre-orders have not been announced. Its release year coincides with the series' 40th anniversary, four decades after the original game arrived in December 1987. The date is clear. Proto Man's role is not.
