When and where: mark the dates
Let's do the practical part first. Gamescom 2026 runs at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany, from August 26 to 30, with public days from the 27th to the 30th —the 26th is mostly for press and trade—. But the date that really matters from your couch comes earlier: Opening Night Live, the big announcement gala hosted by Geoff Keighley, kicks off on Tuesday, August 25 and streams live worldwide.
If you're only going to watch one thing, make it that night: it's where the big trailers, world premieres and surprises drop. And this year it comes with a warning: the show is sold out, all exhibitor space is gone, and it's on track to be the biggest in its history, so there'll be no shortage of material.
Who's coming: the biggest Gamescom ever
The confirmed list is already imposing. Nintendo, Xbox, Capcom, Sega and Konami are all in, joined by names like Tencent, in what the organizers describe as an all-time record for exhibitors. Translated into what you care about: nearly all the big players will be there, with Xbox playing on its European home turf and a Nintendo that, with the Switch 2 already out, has plenty to show.
What to expect from each? It's early for firm lists, but the pattern of recent years repeats: Xbox tends to bring its studio artillery, Capcom is on an unstoppable run with its remakes and action series, and Sega and Konami have been digging up classics with a fine touch. If you're into releases, we've got our radar on heavyweights like Phantom Blade Zero, exactly the kind of game that shines at a show like this.
The big no-show: Rockstar and GTA 6 go their own way
And here's the curious note of this edition: the most anticipated game on the planet won't be in Cologne. Rockstar doesn't do trade shows, and this year it makes that clearer than ever, because it has thrown its own party on the side: its extended look at GTA 6 premieres on August 27 on Netflix, smack in the middle of Gamescom week but without setting foot on the show floor.
It's a very Rockstar move: when you've got the most wanted game of the decade, you don't need to share a stage with anyone. So the week of August 25-30 is going to be a curious double bill —the show on one side, the GTA phenomenon on its own—, and those of us who are hooked will end up exhausted from so many trailers.
What to expect on the 25th (and my bet)
From Opening Night Live I expect the usual raised to the nth degree: two-plus hours of machine-gun announcements, with Keighley dropping his classic «we've got a lot to get to» every ten minutes. There'll be world premieres, dates we've been waiting on and, almost certainly, a surprise nobody leaked.
My bet, signed: I think the big moment will come from a Japanese game —Capcom, or a Nintendo pushing the Switch 2— rather than a Western shooter, and I'll bet you dinner we'll see at least one announcement that's on nobody's radar today. Tuesday the 25th at night we'll find out; we'll cover it hot, trailer by trailer.
