Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. Release date, price and what changes

Sophia trades the sling for a sword, kicks and a grappling hook in a prequel spanning two eras. It launches August 27 and joins Game Pass on day one.

A Plague Tale taught us to survive from the shadows, sling in hand, with thousands of rats closing every route. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy wants us to stop retreating. Sophia can draw a sword, parry at the final moment and use her grappling hook to throw an enemy into the environment. This is not a minor adjustment. It is Asobo Studio's answer to a question left hanging across two games: what happens when this world stops making us feel helpless?

The answer arrives soon. The prequel launches August 27, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a day-one Xbox Game Pass release. Here is what has been confirmed, what the new systems mean in practice and why the story reaches far beyond the 15 years separating Sophia from Amicia and Hugo.

01

Sophia does not fight like Amicia

Asobo wanted a more dynamic game and chose Sophia because her experience makes close combat credible. Lead producer Eric Chort summed it up on the official Xbox podcast: “We wanted a more dynamic game with melee combat.” She carries a sword and dagger, strings attacks together, parries, kicks through guards and uses the grappling hook to pull enemies closer or hurl them into fire and other hazards. The studio names Ghost of Tsushima as a reference, with combat built around reading threats and timing a response rather than thoughtless button mashing.

That does not turn Resonance into carefree action. Xbox podcast host Jeff Rubenstein found in the opening chapters that roughly three hits can kill Sophia, while a finishing blow restores one health segment. In plain terms, it is a fight where every mistake drains the tank and every victory adds a little fuel. The game punishes errors but rewards forward movement once combat begins. Tension comes not only from remaining unseen, but also from deciding whether the next enemy can fall before Sophia runs out of room.

Stealth remains and can thin a group before open combat begins. The difference is that discovery no longer looks like an automatic failure. On paper, it is exactly the change the series needed to avoid staging the same chase for a third time with a different cast.

Two eras and a Minotaur that should not exist

The story begins in Venice, 15 years before A Plague Tale: Requiem. A failed heist connected to her late father's gang forces Sophia to flee with Leni toward Minotaur's Island. The journey exposes her family's connection to the Macula, the curse previously experienced through Hugo.

The surprise lies beneath the island. Play moves between Sophia's medieval era and Theseus more than 2,000 years earlier in the Minoan world. These are not distant flashbacks: both are playable, showing how a decision in antiquity changes what Sophia finds centuries later. A Minoan sphere designed in the fiction by Daedalus manipulates light to solve mechanisms, while a presence hunts Sophia through the island's dark depths.

The split timeline can explore the Macula's origin without forcibly reopening Amicia and Hugo's chapter. Asobo considers their story complete after spending seven or eight years with them. That is a brave choice.

Release date, US price, Game Pass and PC requirements

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches Thursday, August 27, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The US Steam version costs $49.99. It joins Xbox Game Pass on day one and supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a digital Xbox purchase covers console and PC with a shared save.

Preorders include the Heritage Pack: a Minoan Sword, Alec's Pendant and a digital art book exceeding 30 pages. Focus is also selling a separate physical Collector's Box containing Sophia and Theseus figures, a SteelBook, three art prints and a replica ring. Do not mistake it for an all-inclusive game edition. European deliveries are planned for late October.

On PC, the minimum target is 1080p at 30fps on low settings using a 6GB GTX 1060 or RX 5500 XT, a Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i3-12100 and 16GB of RAM. The recommended specification targets 1080p at 60fps on ultra with an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT, Ryzen 5 5600X or Core i5-12400F. Both require an SSD and 75GB of free space. Our guide to checking whether a game will run on your PC explains how to compare those names with your own system. The minimum is the price of entry; the recommended specification is the fluid experience shown in the trailers.

More action, less fear?

Resonance will be playable at Gamescom 2026 in both the Focus and Xbox areas. That will offer the first wider indication of whether parries and executions preserve the vulnerability that made A Plague Tale special, or whether new confidence dilutes its horror.

A Sophia capable of standing her ground is appealing, particularly because Asobo has not removed stealth, puzzles or the darkness that always seems to conceal something worse. The sword still creates the central risk. A monster rarely inspires the same fear once it can be killed. I admit the grappling hook is what makes me most curious, because it works in combat but could also restore that feeling of improvising with whatever is nearby. On August 27, we will find out whether Resonance discovered the balance or merely traded fear for a good fight.
