It Takes Two on Switch 2: free upgrade eligibility and cross-play explained

The October 15 edition adds improved performance and expanded co-op options. The free upgrade requires owning the original Switch edition under the same Nintendo account.

It Takes Two releases on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 15, 2026. Owners of the original Switch edition are eligible for a free upgrade from EA using the same Nintendo account. Owning the PC, PlayStation or Xbox version does not by itself qualify for this Nintendo upgrade.

EA advertises 1080p at 60 FPS in docked mode, compared with 30 FPS on the original Switch. Sixty FPS means twice as many frames per second as 30, which can make motion look smoother. These are publisher specifications rather than our measurements. Connecting a 4K TV does not turn the announced rendering output into 4K.

Claiming the upgrade after launch

Sign into Switch 2 with the Nintendo account that owns the original purchase. EA Help says digital owners can get the upgrade through Nintendo eShop. Physical owners use the in-game eShop link to follow the upgrade process.

Before paying for another copy, check the purchasing account and confirm that the option is the upgrade. The offer is announced for the United States and Spain, with exclusions for Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

An edition upgrade and moving save data are separate operations. Our Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer guide explains what to check before erasing the old console. The upgrade announcement does not verify every possible save-transfer combination here.

Cross-play and Friend’s Pass

The support page confirms online cross-play with PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. EA’s announcement also names PS4 and Xbox One, although the consulted support list omits those older consoles. Players using them should check the launch listing and invitation instructions for the confirmed pairing.

Friend’s Pass lets a full-game owner invite someone who downloads the free pass. One complete copy is needed to play the entire adventure. Console players should also check the online multiplayer subscription required by their platform. A free pass does not replace that subscription.

Cross-play establishes that players can join one another. It does not guarantee transferable saves or game licenses across stores, as our cross-play and cross-save guide explains.

Playing with an original Switch owner

The original Switch edition is outside the new cross-platform pool. EA says a Switch 2 player can obtain the original edition through eShop and use it to play online with a Switch owner. Both Nintendo consoles need Nintendo Switch Online for that route.

GameShare provides a separate local option hosted by Switch 2 with a compatible nearby console. That is different from online cross-play between distant systems. Choose whether you will play in the same room or over the internet before downloading the edition and pass for that method.
