Crossplay, cross-save and cross-progression are different: check before switching consoles

One feature connects players while the others move data

Crossplay lets people on different platforms play together. Cross-save makes one saved game available on several devices. Cross-progression synchronises a broader account state such as level, characters, inventory or battle-pass progress. EA explains the distinction, but every game defines its own scope.

A title may support crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series while keeping progression separate. It can also move progress from PS4 to PS5 without carrying it from PlayStation to Xbox. Seeing one label never confirms the other two.

The central account decides what travels

Fortnite stores progress and purchases on the linked Epic account, although some currency has exceptions. Destiny 2's Cross Save selects one active character set and explicitly warns that Cross Save and Cross Play are separate processes. Ubisoft stores cross-progression on Ubisoft Connect rather than the console account.

Linking the wrong account can leave progress attached to another profile or trigger restrictions on relinking. Before accepting an irreversible merge, confirm which account contains the progress you want and save screenshots of the identifiers.

What to verify before buying another version

Find four answers in the official support page: which platforms play together, which data synchronises, which purchases or currency are excluded, and whether another copy is required. For Honor, for example, shares progression but still requires ownership on every platform because it does not include cross-ownership.

Check whether the game separates console generations too. PS4 may share servers with Xbox One but remain outside PS5 matchmaking even though every store advertises crossplay. Competitive games can also separate controller and keyboard users or let players disable crossplay, which reduces the available population.

Premium currency requires its own check. Purchases may carry over while a balance bought through one store remains there under platform rules. Spend or document that balance before moving, and never unlink a primary account until the publisher explains what happens to characters, licences and downloadable content.
