Not an eccentric's whim: it's Silicon Valley's biggest bet

There was a time when billionaires competed to build the biggest rocket. Now they compete over something more intimate: not dying. The fight against ageing has gone from charlatans' turf to one of the most serious, best-funded bets on the planet, and behind it aren't cranks but the very names that dominate the technology you use every day.

The reasoning they share is as cold as it is logical: if the body is a machine and ageing is the build-up of specific damage, then ageing is an engineering problem, and engineering problems get solved with enough money and talent. The names and the numbers: who's putting up the money

The crown jewel is Altos Labs, born in 2022 with some $3 billion committed — an unprecedented figure for a new company — and Jeff Bezos among its major investors. Its mission is precisely cellular reprogramming, and for it it recruited the cream of world biology, including Shinya Yamanaka himself. Next comes Retro Biosciences, funded with around $180 million from Sam Altman — yes, the OpenAI one — and valued at $1.8 billion in 2026, with the declared goal of adding a decade of healthy life.

They're not alone. Google has been at it since 2013 with Calico, its discreet long-term bet on understanding ageing, and the list has grown to include names like NewLimit, the reprogramming company founded by Brian Armstrong, the Coinbase boss. And then there's the individual, media-friendly version of all this, Bryan Johnson and his two million a year on not ageing: the same dream, turned into a show.

Artificial intelligence is the fuel of this race

And here's the piece that connects it all, and explains why this story lives in our AI section. That Sam Altman, the face of artificial intelligence, puts his money into a longevity company is no coincidence: it's the sign that AI and rejuvenation are the same race. Artificial intelligence is the missing accelerant, because it does in months what used to take years: it models how proteins fold, tracks patterns across mountains of biological data and designs candidate drugs at a speed no human lab can match.

Put another way, the same technology that writes your emails today is learning to read the language of cells. That's why longevity escape velocity has stopped sounding like a delusion: it's not that biology sped up on its own, it's that it grew a silicon co-pilot. When AI money meets the biology of ageing, trials that once took a lifetime start reaching people.

The uncomfortable question none of them answers

There remains the vertiginous part, and it's worth saying plainly. If this race succeeds, who will it be for first? The history of medicine says the expensive starts out as a rich person's thing and gets cheaper over the years, but few things widen an inequality like some being able to buy decades of life and others not. That the first people interested in defeating death are precisely those with the most to lose by dying is not entirely reassuring.

Meanwhile, the bet keeps growing, and with it the sense that we're witnessing something historic: the first generation to take seriously, with billions on the table, the idea that dying of old age might be optional.
