A mod turns Baldur's Gate 3 into a third-person game, and suddenly it looks like a different game

It's called True Third-Person Camera, it's the work of modder Relysia and it's spent a week on Nexus Mods putting the camera over your character's shoulder, with configurable field of view, height and tracking. The international press sums it up the same way: it makes you want to start another run.

The over-the-shoulder camera Larian never shipped

Baldur's Gate 3 has always been played from above, with that strategist's camera that shows you everything except your character's face. True Third-Person Camera, published on Nexus Mods by modder Relysia, drops the viewpoint to the shoulder, action-game style, and lets you tune field of view, camera offset, height and tracking speed until it sits exactly where you want it.

The mod is designed to pair with the veteran WASD movement mod, and together they change the entire game: exploring Baldur's Gate glued to your character, with the rooftops above you instead of below, turns environments you've stared at from the air for a hundred hours into streets you actually walk. Similar workarounds existed — Native Camera Tweaks, the WASD mod itself — but none with this level of fine control. Installation is the usual Nexus routine: download it, enable it in the game's own mod manager or in Vortex, and the camera settings show up in-game, no manual file editing required. Five minutes, instructions video included.

The press compares it to Dragon Age, and the flaws count too

The reaction says plenty about the appetite for this. Luke Stephens toured the game with the new camera and his video title is already the verdict: playing like this is awesome, with 131,000 views on day one. PC Gamer celebrates it with Dragon Age nostalgics in mind and Kotaku admits it's the excuse they needed to start the game over. It makes sense: seen from the shoulder, Larian's RPG looks an awful lot like those companions-and-campfire games nobody makes anymore.

The caveats exist and deserve saying. Animations suffer at close range — the game was never designed to be looked at from this near — and the footage shows the odd stutter, especially when turning. It's a PC mod, like everything on Nexus, so there's nothing here for console players. And in a turn-based game, the new camera shines more while strolling than while fighting: combat still asks for the old tactical view.

If you've had the game parked, our co-op guide already made the case for Baldur's Gate 3 as the long sofa plan; this mod is the missing argument for a second run on PC. Larian made the game; Relysia just gave it another skin for free.
