That is the practical difference between a chatbot and an agent. The chatbot answers. The agent receives a goal, plans the route, uses tools and keeps going until the task is done or a human decision is required.

That also explains why interfaces for supervising several agents at once are appearing. Coordination is becoming part of the job.
More useful agents can also make larger mistakes
An incorrect chat response can be deleted. An agent connected to email, files or business systems can take the wrong action. Companies are therefore building approval layers, sandboxes and simulated environments around them.
The agent era has not arrived because a company declared it. It arrived when users began saying 'handle it' and closing the tab.
