Ace Combat 8 launches October 2 with a carrier campaign and competitive co-op

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve reaches PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam on October 2. Its campaign begins aboard the Endurance, an aging carrier retreating after the invasion of your homeland. The rescued pilot inherits a famous call sign and the expectation that its legend can become real.

Bandai Namco's September 25 overview makes the ship a home between sorties, populated by refugees and squadmates. That gives preparation a narrative setting: the next aircraft is being chosen by the remnants of a defeated force.

The briefing should influence your loadout

The systems walkthrough describes aircraft selection, upgrade parts, special weapons and orders to wingmen, including attack and cover. Air battles, ground targets and enormous enemy weapons ask for different preparations.

That suggests variety beyond following another target with an unchanged fighter. It does not establish whether the campaign delivers on that variety. We have not completed the game, and the official images are not our own performance measurements.

Competitive co-op has two different meanings here

In Co-Op Assault, two four-pilot teams race for scores against computer-controlled opponents. Co-Op Warfare adds direct fighting between the teams alongside AI threats. Those are different kinds of competition, even though both ask teammates to cooperate.

Air Base is a social lobby for up to 100 pilots, not a promise of 100-player combat matches. Online progression and saves are separate from the campaign. Crossplay is announced across PS5, Xbox and PC, but that does not automatically mean your save follows you between versions. Our crossplay and cross-progression guide separates those features.

Buy for the mode you actually want

For a group purchase, check the intended mode and your console platform's online requirements. For a campaign purchase, multiplayer features cannot substitute for evidence about the story or mission quality.
