August 11 will be remembered as label day, the same hours in which Anthropic confirmed its invisible watermark for Claude's text, Spotify announced its own for music. It's called 'AI Persona', it's a visible badge, and it will flag artist profiles that aren't people, AI-fabricated identities with synthetic faces and invented biographies.
The badge will show on the profile, in the About section, in search results and next to every track, but on top of that, by default, music from these profiles is excluded from editorial, algorithmic and personalised recommendations. No in-house playlists, no Discover Weekly, no autoplay radio. It will only play for listeners who deliberately follow that profile.
Hiding is getting harder
As of Tuesday, any project can declare itself an 'AI Persona' in Spotify for Artists, and badges start appearing in mid-September. Spotify won't rely on good faith alone, it will review profiles with photorealistic synthetic names and imagery on its own, starting with those above certain audience thresholds, and listeners will be able to report unlabelled profiles. There's an appeal route for anyone badged by mistake.
There is a nuance, and it's that the badge marks identity, not tools. A flesh-and-blood artist using AI in their process won't get one, the target is projects with nobody behind the microphone, like The Velvet Sundown, the non-existent band that passed a million monthly listeners last summer while hardly anyone knew it was synthetic.

The flood behind the measure: the junk now counts in the millions
Spotify arrives here pushed by the numbers. The platform itself removed 75 million spam or fraudulent tracks last year, and competitor Deezer estimates that over a quarter of daily uploads are already fully AI-generated music. The pool got so big it had started leaking into the automatic playlists of millions of users who never asked for it.
Spotify has said its programming will focus on 'elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music'. Translation: AI can publish, but the shop window is for people.
As a musician, this time I applaud (with one caveat)
I say this having lived off music for years, this badge protects exactly what needed protecting, the playlist slot a real artist breaks their back for. Every recommendation a synthetic profile took was taken from someone who has spent years grinding through gigs and demos. The caveat is that the badge depends on Spotify detecting well, and whoever profits from fake-profile farms has every incentive to dress them up as human, so listener reports will be the real quality control.
