Jagex scraps RuneScape Reignited 12 days after its reveal following a veteran backlash

Reignited characters were meant to start from scratch with a separate economy and a separate membership. Veterans saw a split community. The Adventure Guide, the early-game remaster and a 10-day free trial still arrive on December 2.

Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, the fresh-start character type it unveiled on October 3 at RuneFest in Birmingham, England, and planned to launch on December 2. Associate creative director Mod Ryan announced the decision on October 15 in a video and a post on the official site. "It is clear that we missed the mark on this," he wrote.

Nothing current players already have is going away. The December 2 update still brings a new Adventure Guide, the first part of a remaster of the early game and a 10-day free trial with no split worlds. Old School RuneScape, Jagex's other live game, was never part of Reignited and is unaffected.

What Reignited would have been

Reignited was not a separate game or a classic server. It was a permanent character type, similar to the existing Ironman mode, which already bars trading with other players, and aimed at new players and lapsed ones. According to the original announcement, those characters would get their own economy and their own Grand Exchange, RuneScape's player-run marketplace, so they could only trade with each other.

The rules went beyond trading. Reignited characters could not exchange items with veterans or share boss instances with them, would have separate hiscores with no paid progression, and would require a membership of their own. They could still chat, join the same clans and play on regular worlds as well as Reignited-only ones. Jagex offered them free access to members' worlds from December 2 to 12 and pitched the mode as RuneScape "as it was always meant to be."

Why veterans pushed back

The core complaint was about division more than money. As PC Gamer summarized it, long-time players feared a split community, disliked the limits on playing with new characters and balked at paying for a second membership. If newcomers and returning players settled into their own worlds and market, the regular worlds could end up with fewer people to trade or group with.

The tagline stung too. Calling Reignited the game as it was always meant to be read as a verdict on 25 years of progress by the people who never left. On October 6 Jagex apologized for making existing players feel they were no longer its focus, but it kept the project alive.

A few days later, the studio floated concrete revisions, reported by Massively OP: letting existing members play a Reignited character without a second subscription, making the Reignited-only worlds temporary and carrying over cosmetics and bank space for veterans who started fresh. In that post Jagex said RuneScape has hundreds of thousands of members and has been in a slight decline for a long time. The changes were not enough, and the cancellation followed on October 15.

The mistake Jagex did not want to repeat

Mod Ryan tied the reversal to a memory every veteran shares. The last time Jagex ignored player feedback, he wrote, combat changed forever, and the studio says it took more than a decade to recover. That points to the 2012 combat overhaul known as Evolution of Combat, which drove many players away and led Jagex to reopen a 2007-era version in 2013, today's Old School RuneScape.

Other MMOs have run fresh starts alongside the main game without forcing players to pick a side. Blizzard bundles its World of Warcraft variants into one subscription, as our guide to modern WoW, Classic and Forever explains. Reignited instead walled off a second economy inside the same game and charged separately for it.

What arrives on December 2, and who gets the free trial

Everything that did not depend on Reignited stays on the calendar. The Adventure Guide is a new panel that suggests a path through more than two decades of quests and activities, and the first part of the Remastered Journey refreshes early areas and quests such as Demon Slayer and Dragon Slayer. Before that, official plugins, in public beta since October 6, launch on Monday, October 19.

The free trial opens RuneScape's members' worlds and content from December 2 to 12, with exact times still to be confirmed. It covers new characters and any character that has not had a membership since June 2, 2026. It does not include Old School RuneScape's members' worlds.

Players who have been subscribed since June 2 cannot use the trial, and the terms state they will not be refunded for subscriptions or purchases as a result. There is nothing to refund on the Reignited side: the mode was not due until December 2 and Jagex never published a price for its separate membership.

The 2027 roadmap stays

Jagex says the 2027 plan revealed at RuneFest is unchanged, though still subject to change. Hoard of Dragons, with Dragon Slayer II and an Agility rework, is slated for early 2027, followed by City of Gnomes in the summer and Secrets of Karamja, with a new raid, in the fall. The quality-of-life program the studio calls Road to Restoration also continues.

The open question is how Jagex will bring in new players without a separate starting point. The Adventure Guide and the early-game remaster now carry that job. The studio has not said whether a fresh start could return under different rules. Some games reset the whole universe for everyone instead, as EVE Frontier is doing with its Vestiges cycle, an option RuneScape, with 25 years of accumulated progress, has not even raised.
