The difference in one sentence
Modern WoW is the current MMO with past expansions and recent systems. Classic recreates historical stages with period-appropriate rules. Forever starts again from original Azeroth, then builds an original continuity instead of repeating the old calendar.
The three families will coexist as separate options. Forever launches November 4 and, like the basic versions of the others, is included with a subscription or game time.
Choose modern for the present
Modern concentrates the current story, newest zones, contemporary endgame, competitive seasons and systems such as housing. A subscription includes past expansions, but Midnight is purchased separately. It fits players who want each update at release and want to follow The Worldsoul Saga.
It also carries the most accumulated layers. Tutorials accelerate access, but the old world is no longer central and level 60 is not the end of progression.
Choose Classic for a specific era
Classic returns to the rules, progression and content of historical versions. Its appeal is reproducing a known period, including slower grouping and travel, deliberate coordination and original raids. Depending on the available realm, that period may advance or remain fixed.
It is not one immovable edition: Blizzard has offered Era realms, seasons and different progressions. Check the client version and realm type before creating a character.
Choose Forever for a fresh start, not a museum
Forever launches with level 60 and the original continents, but adds three zones, more than 1,000 quests, nine dungeons and two raids. The Skyborne race requires an optional upgrade. Blizzard calls it in the announcement a third home designed to grow for years.
Its story begins after Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. It best suits players seeking the weight of a classic adventure with new discoveries, not an exact 2004 replica.
Our recommendation
Start in modern if friends are already current or you want every patch. Choose Classic to revisit a particular expansion. Wait for Forever if you want a community beginning together, a less accelerated pace and content nobody has memorized.
You do not need three active characters. A subscription lets you sample all three routes, but characters, realms and progress remain separate. Choose one main version and visit the others for meaningful updates.
