Amazon redesigns Kindle, but its new page-turn remote also works with 2024 models

The entry Kindle gets a flush-front screen and an aluminum option. The $34.99 Click remote reaches older devices, while the button cover requires a new Signature Edition.

Amazon’s redesigned Kindle family starts at $149.99, with flush-front screens and a new aluminum-backed entry model. Physical page-turn controls arrive as separate accessories. The $34.99 Kindle Click remote works with Kindle devices released in 2024 or later, so existing owners may not need a new reader to get that feature.

The alternative is a $79.99 cover with built-in buttons, restricted to the new Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature models. Amazon says the regular Kindle and aluminum version went on sale on October 1 in the US. Paperwhite and Colorsoft preorders are opening on a rolling basis. Choose the screen before the finish

Both entry Kindles have 6-inch screens. Spending $40 more on the aluminum version takes storage from 16GB to 32GB, rather than buying a larger display. Amazon’s claimed 30% speed improvement concerns opening a book on the new base model. It is not a measurement of faster page turns.

Paperwhite offers water resistance and adjustable warm lighting. Colorsoft is the option for colored illustrations, covers and comics, uses Amazon already described for the previous model. A mostly text-only library gives you less reason to pay for color. We have not tested the new screens, so claims about improved clarity remain unverified by us.

  • Kindle, 16GB: from $149.99.
  • Aluminum Kindle, 32GB: $189.99.
  • Paperwhite, 16GB: from $199.99. Signature, 32GB: $249.99.
  • Colorsoft, 16GB: from $289.99. Signature, 32GB: $319.99.
Both Kindle versions have a 6-inch display. The standard model has 16 GB and the matte-aluminum-back version has 32 GB; the bars represent twice the storage.

A remote for older readers, a cover for new Signature models

Click sends a page-turn command over Bluetooth, letting you leave the reader on a stand. Its 2024-or-later compatibility is broader than the Page-Turn Cover’s. The cover connects through small metal contacts, called pogo pins, and is offered for the new Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature only.

Those Signature models also add aluminum backs, automatically adjusting front lights and double-tap page turning. Their optional Charging Dock costs $59.99 and uses contacts. Do not assume an old wireless pad will work with that system. Our Qi2 and MagSafe guide explains why magnetic attachment alone says nothing about the charging method.

A Paperwhite Signature plus the button cover totals $329.98 before applicable taxes. As with the Surface Pro and its separate keyboard, compare the cost of the setup you intend to use. If you own a supported Kindle and only want remote page turns, the $34.99 Click is the relevant purchase.

Kindle Click connects by Bluetooth to Kindle models released in 2024 or later. The button cover and charging dock are limited to the new 2026 Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature models.

The new body is easier to judge than the display claims

Amazon’s edge-to-edge color description concerns the housing, which now carries the same finish around the device. It does not mean the entire range has color screens. Colorsoft already existed in 2024, along with some of the lighting technology repeated in this announcement. The concrete reasons to consider this generation are the flush front, aluminum options and new controls. Whether the screen itself warrants replacing a working reader needs a direct comparison.
