The Weapons return as disasters, not a boss checklist
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will close the trilogy in spring 2027, yet its new Gamescom 2026 trailer settled something more interesting than a launch window. Square Enix is finally showing how it plans to turn the original game's final stretch into a world that appears to be collapsing around the party.
The Weapons emerge to defend the planet and attack without distinguishing friend from foe. The footage treats them as moving catastrophes crossing deserts, skies and seas rather than a sequence of sealed-off arenas. PlayStation's official recap points to that same scale, while Square Enix says some encounters will become exceptionally demanding endgame battles that pay tribute to the 1997 game.
That distinction matters. This last chapter has to fulfil several promises at once: finish its character arcs, account for the ways Remake and Rebirth diverged, and preserve the weight of a planetary crisis. If the Weapons feel embedded in the world instead of waiting behind boss doors, Revelation will have cleared one of its hardest tests.
That is the decision we find more interesting than the spectacle. The original made the Weapons feel too large for the party and almost too large for its own map. Turning them into events that disrupt the journey could restore that sensation, even when the production now has enough resources to show everything up close.
Highwind makes the world itself the final test
The Highwind will let players fly across the planet and land to explore connected regions more freely. The trailer also shows parachutes, a grappling hook and Chocobos. After Rebirth opened up its environments, the airship cannot amount to a handsome fast-travel menu. It needs to make the planet feel continuous and worth revisiting.
Combat adds the FITS system, which gives characters roles and related abilities. The trailer casts Cloud as a Warrior and Tifa as a Black Mage, deliberately pushing both away from their usual functions. Typhon also returns as a summon. These additions should keep an advanced save from relying on the exact setup that already solved the previous game.
The freedom still has to be meaningful. Its scale and systems place Revelation naturally among the RPGs we are following on PS5 and PC. Launching on Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day as every other version will also test the hardware far more seriously than a late port ever could.

Release window and platforms
Square Enix will release Final Fantasy VII Revelation simultaneously on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC in spring 2027. The PC version will be sold through Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Windows Store. The first trailer's official description confirms that this is the third and final chapter, opening with a blunt promise: “The time for the final battle is at hand.”
There is no exact date, price or edition lineup for Spain or any other market yet. Square Enix has not explained how much of the planet will actually be open to the Highwind either. What it has confirmed already defines the ambition: this is not a contained epilogue, but the chapter that must make the entire journey cohere without shrinking the ending that inspired it.
Today, the entire trilogy rests on one very specific decision: making that enormous planet feel genuinely threatened instead of allowing it to become a backdrop.
