Does GTA 6 have online? What Rockstar and Take-Two have said, and what happens to GTA Online

Not at launch. Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as a single-player game, and neither Rockstar nor its parent company, Take-Two, has announced an online mode, a name for one or a date. Sony's official GTA VI page puts it plainly, "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience," and lists the game as one player.

What is confirmed is that GTA Online, the multiplayer side of GTA V that has been running since 2013, isn't going anywhere when the new game lands. Take-Two keeps telling investors it will support it. Everything else you've heard about a GTA VI online mode is either an expectation or a rumor, and we sort one from the other below. What Take-Two has said

Take-Two hasn't said GTA VI will never get an online mode. It simply won't talk about one. On its August 7 earnings call, an analyst asked how to think about the parts of the game that could keep players engaged after launch. CEO Strauss Zelnick declined to go there, saying it was something the company wasn't talking about that day. On the same call he described GTA Online's update cadence as stable and said Take-Two expects to keep supporting it.

That line goes back further. On February 3, asked what GTA Online would look like once GTA VI was out, Zelnick said he had "every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online." At the September 17 shareholder meeting, an audio-only event with no published transcript, the company described GTA VI as a single-player title and said GTA Online would carry on after launch, according to notes taken by people who listened in.

GTA Online is also still growing. In the October to December 2025 quarter, player spending inside GTA Online on virtual currency and add-ons rose 27% year over year, CFO Lainie Goldstein said in Take-Two's prepared remarks. Until GTA VI has an online mode of its own, shutting GTA Online down would mean giving up that revenue with nothing to replace it.

What the store listings say

Microsoft's store listing names single player, achievements and cloud saves, with no online multiplayer, and Rockstar's support page on editions and versions doesn't mention an online mode at all. Sony's page only notes that online features require a PlayStation account, without saying which features GTA VI has.

With no multiplayer announced, there's no official PlayStation Plus or Game Pass requirement for playing GTA VI online. If Rockstar adds an online mode later, it will have to spell out the subscription rules for each console then.

The 2027 date is an outsider's guess

The only date floating around didn't come from Rockstar. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said in an interview at Tokyo Game Show on September 17 that he expects a big viewership spike around GTA VI and a bigger one next year, in 2027, when the multiplayer arrives. He said his team had talked with Rockstar about working with streamers. But Clancy doesn't work for Rockstar and can't announce its plans, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has confirmed or denied that timeline.

The GTA V launch also suggests online won't arrive with the game, though it proves nothing. GTA V launched September 17, 2013, and GTA Online followed on October 1, two weeks later. Rockstar had announced it with a trailer a month before GTA V came out. With GTA VI less than three weeks out, there's no announcement and no trailer for an online mode, so multiplayer in November looks very unlikely based on what's public.

In practice, buy GTA VI for Jason and Lucia's story and treat any online date as speculation until Rockstar posts it on its own site.

What happens to GTA Online on PS5, Xbox and PC

GTA Online is still live and still getting content. Its latest big update, The Kortz Center Heist, arrived July 14, 2026, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, according to Take-Two's release schedule. GTA Online isn't included with GTA VI. It comes with GTA V, which is sold separately.

Since June 18, Rockstar has offered the PS5 version of GTA V free to anyone who owns it on PS4, disc or digital, and the Xbox Series X|S version free to digital Xbox One owners. Xbox One discs don't qualify because of a platform limitation, per Rockstar Support. Once you upgrade, you can migrate your GTA Online profile from the game's Online menu. After that, progress no longer syncs between console generations, and a PS4 or Xbox One profile can't be moved to PC.

Nobody has announced that your GTA Online character, cash or properties will carry over to GTA VI. There's no tool for it and no promise of one, so spending in GTA Online only makes sense if you plan to keep playing it. The free month of GTA+ is a GTA Online perk

Digital preorders and purchases of GTA VI made before November 20 come with the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+, according to Rockstar Support. GTA+ is GTA Online's subscription. Its PlayStation Store listing calls it the premium membership for GTA Online players on PS5, priced at $7.99 a month, and lists perks such as GTA$500,000 deposited every month, a 100-car garage and a library of classic Rockstar games. Nothing on that page says those perks apply to GTA VI.
