Advertising has arrived
ChatGPT is no longer an ad-free product across Europe. On August 24, OpenAI expanded its advertising system to 31 European markets, following six months of testing in the United States. The company says ads only appear on Free and Go accounts. Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free.
Each placement sits apart from the answer and carries its own label. OpenAI says a brand cannot pay to alter ChatGPT's response, advertisers do not receive conversations and users can control personalization. Those promises matter because the ad is not sitting beside a page of links. It appears next to a conversation where people may explain what they want to buy and why.
This is no longer a tiny test either. OpenAI says tens of thousands of marketers have advertised in ChatGPT and now offers impression, click and conversion objectives, along with geographic targeting, custom audiences and measurement through OpenAI Pixel.

Registration is open, but EU self-service remains patchy
The Ads Manager site lets a business create an account and begin setup, but registration and country availability are separate. OpenAI's official availability table still marks Spain, France, Germany, Italy and most of the European Union as Coming Soon for self-service. The United Kingdom is listed as available.
For now, advertisers in the new European markets can buy through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team, an agency or a technology partner. OpenAI said self-service would follow later in the summer, but it has not published a firm date for the remaining countries. Calling it fully open would confuse an accessible signup page with permission to launch campaigns independently.
Once enabled, the flow has three familiar stages: set the campaign and budget, add the creative, then measure impressions, clicks and conversions. OpenAI's screenshots look much closer to a conventional ad manager than to prompting ChatGPT.

What changes for ChatGPT users
Free and Go users can encounter ads while comparing products, planning trips or choosing software. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users should not. The meaningful test will not be whether a label exists, but whether that separation stays unmistakable as formats evolve and placements fit conversations more naturally.
The expansion arrives while OpenAI is opening more commercial fronts and preparing Astra, its upcoming model with advanced coding and cybersecurity capabilities. Our guide to how ChatGPT works internally separates the model, context and interface for readers who want to understand what generates an answer.
Ads have crossed the European threshold. Self-service has not crossed every border. We will update this story when OpenAI's own table changes from coming soon to available.
