007 First Light adds path tracing on PC: what you need and what actually changes

The update is available now for GeForce RTX GPUs, combining full path tracing, Ray Reconstruction and DLSS. The regular renderer remains available if your PC is not ready.

Kensington's most expensive light

IO Interactive has released the 007 First Light path-tracing update on PC. The new mode replaces many familiar lighting shortcuts with a more complete calculation of light bounces, reflections and shadows. It can transform a glossy hotel or evening gala. It will matter far less in a flat corridor.

The option is limited to GeForce RTX graphics cards. The game keeps its rasterized renderer for other configurations, so it has not suddenly become an NVIDIA-exclusive title. Path tracing is a visual and performance choice, not a requirement for continuing to play.

Glacier uses RTXGI for global illumination, Opacity Micro Maps for complex geometry and Ray Reconstruction to clean an image rendered from very few samples. If those labels blur together, our plain-English ray tracing guide separates the technology from the marketing.

DLSS is not an optional extra here

IOI has integrated DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction in place of traditional denoisers. It is a fundamental part of the pipeline: real-time path tracing cannot cast enough rays to create a clean image on its own, so the algorithm reconstructs the result from incomplete information.

Super Resolution and Frame Generation are available too. Frame generation can make the counter substantially higher, but it does not reduce base-frame latency or rescue controls that already feel sluggish. Find a stable base using resolution and quality settings first, then add generated frames if your GPU has room.

NVIDIA and IOI do not promise one performance figure because GPU, resolution and scene complexity change the result dramatically. A Game Ready profile cannot make the maximum preset sensible for every PC. The goal is better lighting without making Bond feel as though he is moving through syrup.

How to test it without wrecking performance

Install the game update and compatible Game Ready driver, open the graphics menu and begin from a preset you already know. Enable path tracing, test a demanding area and lower internal resolution through DLSS first. If Ray Reconstruction appears separately, keep it paired with the traced mode to avoid a noisy image. Do not judge from still screenshots alone. Walk through glossy surfaces, fine vegetation and rooms with several light sources, watching stability, controller response and artifacts in motion. A perfect reflection in one frame can hide flicker that only appears while the camera moves.

This is an ambitious and, crucially, optional upgrade. NVIDIA's official comparison video naturally selects scenes that show it at its best. Your decision should come from how it behaves on your own machine. On PC, the best fidelity is the one that remains pleasant to play.
