Start with Star Fox 64
The clearest entry remains Star Fox 64, available in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics app with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. It retells the war against Andross, introduces branching routes and establishes the voices and manoeuvres repeated across the series.
The Super Nintendo original presents an earlier version of the same conflict. It is historically important, but finishing it is not required to understand 64.
The main line after 64
Star Fox Adventures, Assault and Command follow. Adventures jumps ahead and replaces much of the spacecraft action with exploration on foot. It joined Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics on Switch 2 on September 9, 2026 and requires the Expansion Pack. Assault restores aerial and ground missions, while Command closes this branch through multiple endings.
That order preserves relationships and consequences. Adventures still works on its own, but the changes to Fox and his crew carry more weight after 64.

Zero is another reinterpretation
Star Fox Zero revisits the original conflict rather than continuing Command. Its Wii U controls and structure make it a separate branch alongside Guard. Star Fox 2, officially released long after its development, continues the SNES approach without joining the 64 timeline.
Switch 2 also has 2026's Star Fox, released June 25 as a modern recreation of Star Fox 64. Star Fox 64 3D is another version of that campaign. Read Switch 2 game and controller compatibility and the latest Star Fox multiplayer update before choosing between the modern remake, 64 and Adventures.

Our recommended order
Play Star Fox 64 or its 2026 recreation, then Adventures, Assault and Command. Approach the original, Star Fox 2 and Zero as branches or reinterpretations, with Guard as a tactical spin-off. If you only want one, 64 remains the most concentrated explanation of why this series keeps returning.
