Do you keep PS Plus games? The crucial difference between Monthly Games and Game Catalog

What to claim, what leaves the service, what happens after cancellation and why buying DLC does not grant ownership of the base game.

Short answer: claim Monthly Games and rent the Catalog

PlayStation Plus Monthly Games must be added to your library during their monthly window. You can redownload them while your membership remains active. You do not need to install them, but failing to claim them before the deadline means they never join your library.

Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles work differently. They remain playable only while your tier includes that catalog and the specific game remains in the service. When Sony removes it, a downloaded copy stops working.

What happens when you cancel

When membership ends, both claimed Monthly Games and Catalog titles lock. Resubscribing to a compatible plan restores Monthly Games already in your library. Catalog access returns only for titles that are still offered.

Games purchased with a PS Plus discount remain ordinary purchases. Subscription and purchase licenses are separate, which also matters in our examination of whether you own digital games.

How to claim Monthly Games

On PS5, open Games, PlayStation Plus, Benefits and Monthly Games, then choose Download. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus, select Monthly Games and use Add to Library. Remote downloads are available through the PlayStation App or a browser.

The official PlayStation instructions use Download on PS5, but completing the claim attaches the entitlement to your account. A monthly reminder to add every title prevents accidental misses.

DLC, expansions and save files

You can buy DLC for a downloaded Catalog game, but that purchase does not include the base game. If the title leaves PS Plus or membership lapses, access to the combination ends until you resubscribe or buy the game. Purchased DLC works again when a valid base-game license returns.

Save data remains local or in cloud storage according to your setup and can be reused later. Check edition compatibility before buying content. Our guide to Essential, Extra and Premium helps identify the required tier.

The rule that prevents most confusion

Think of two verbs: claim and access. Monthly Games have a claim deadline and remain tied to your subscription history. The Catalog grants temporary access to a changing library. Both require active membership to play.

Check the store listing and Last Chance to Play area before buying expansions or starting a very long game. The September 2026 Monthly Games are a practical reminder: claim first, decide what to install later.
