Already own a PS5? Keep it for now
If you already own a PS5, you can play Grand Theft Auto VI on 19 November without buying another console. PS5 Pro will almost certainly be the best PlayStation version, but nothing available today proves that the difference is worth €899.99 for this one game.
PlayStation now labels GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced. That is the full extent of the confirmation. Rockstar has not announced resolution targets, frame rates, ray tracing features or Pro-specific display modes.
Buying now means paying for an improvement before knowing what it is.
Our advice to PS5 and PS5 Digital owners is to wait for analysis of the finished game. Starting from scratch is a different calculation: the Pro begins to make sense if you own a strong 4K display and plan to use it across a wider library of enhanced games. At that point, the question is not how much you love GTA 6. It is how often you will benefit from Sony's most expensive console.
The PS5 Pro badge promises an upgrade, not 60fps
Sony uses the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge for games with hardware-specific features or modes, while warning that the exact enhancements vary by title. Developers can use PSSR machine-learning reconstruction for a cleaner image, raise internal resolution, improve ray tracing or stabilise frame rate. Sony advertises up to 45% faster rendering, a GPU with 67% more compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the standard PS5.
Released games show how broad that badge is. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth uses PSSR to deliver 60fps with image quality close to its old Graphics mode. Horizon Forbidden West brings visuals comparable to or better than the base console's Quality mode to 60fps. Other teams have prioritised resolution, stability or reflections. PlayStation's own developer roundup puts very different upgrades under the same label.
GTA 6 also has to simulate pedestrians, traffic, physics, animation and AI. Moving from 30 to 60fps means updating that entire city in half the time. The Pro puts most of its extra resources into graphics while retaining a CPU close to the one inside the standard PS5. Digital Foundry considers 60fps unlikely if CPU load is the limiting factor. That is informed technical analysis, not a statement from Rockstar.
A 40fps mode for 120Hz screens would be a plausible middle ground. A 30fps Pro mode could still look substantially better, and Rockstar may choose a different split altogether. All of those outcomes fit beneath the same badge, which is precisely why buying the console now would be premature.

Upgrading from PS5 costs far more than €250
Sony raised European prices on 2 April 2026: PS5 Pro now costs €899.99, the disc PS5 costs €649.99 and PS5 Digital costs €599.99. For a first-time buyer, that is a €250 or €300 premium.
For an existing owner, that subtraction is misleading. You spend €899.99 first, then recover whatever your old PS5 sells for. The net cost is the Pro's price minus the resale value of your console, plus any accessories you need. Sony ships PS5 Pro with 2TB of storage but no disc drive or vertical stand. A DualSense is included.
GTA 6 has one peculiar wrinkle: its retail box contains a download code rather than a disc, as covered in our GTA 6 console comparison. You do not need the Pro's optional drive for this game. You may still need one for an existing PS4 and PS5 disc collection, so selling a disc PS5 can leave part of your shelf without a machine.

Your display determines how much of the upgrade you can see
PS5 Pro makes its strongest case on a large 4K HDR television viewed close enough for fine detail to register. Higher internal resolution, cleaner PSSR reconstruction and better reflections can separate the two versions there. A potential 40fps mode would also require a 120Hz panel, while VRR could smooth out smaller performance drops.
Some of that advantage disappears on a 1080p screen, a small television across the room or a panel limited to 60Hz. More stable performance and cleaner image quality may remain, but €899.99 is difficult to justify if finding the upgrade requires pausing a comparison video.
The useful test will show the same Leonida road, at the same time of day, carrying the same amount of traffic on both consoles. Promotional screenshots cannot measure stability, and YouTube compression hides some of the clarity the Pro is designed to sell. Until that comparison exists, the choice pits a real console against an imagined graphics mode.
Three buyers, three different answers
You already own a PS5. Stay where you are. Your console will run GTA 6, and there is no comparison yet that can price the upgrade. If the Pro eventually gets an exclusive 60fps mode or an excellent 40fps option, you can decide with measurements and your PS5's resale value in front of you.
You are starting from scratch. PS5 Pro is the PlayStation most likely to deliver the best console version of GTA 6. It makes sense with a high-end 4K television, a strong preference for image quality and a budget that does not force you to compromise on the display itself. For someone mainly buying a console for GTA 6, the standard PS5 remains the sensible choice.
You will play other enhanced games. This is where the numbers begin to work. If GTA 6 joins Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us and other enhanced games you will genuinely play, the premium no longer rests on a single trip to Vice City.
We will update this guide if Rockstar's 27 August extended look reveals technical details, then again before 19 November with confirmed display modes and the first PS5 versus PS5 Pro analysis.
Until then, the €899.99 stays in the bank.
