A monitor accepting HDR10 only confirms that it understands an HDR signal. It does not prove that the panel has enough brightness, contrast, color or backlight control to display that signal well. A screen can trigger Windows' HDR indicator and still look washed out because it has to compress the content into very limited capabilities.
VESA explains the distinction directly: HDR10 is a communication protocol between the GPU and display, while DisplayHDR is a performance specification. Every DisplayHDR-certified monitor must support HDR10, but not every HDR10 screen has passed DisplayHDR testing.
DisplayHDR measures more than peak brightness
Certification tests luminance across different window sizes and durations, black level, color gamut, bit depth and backlight response. The classic tiers run from DisplayHDR 400 through 500, 600, 1000 and 1400. True Black tiers are designed for OLED and other emissive screens where individual pixels can turn off.
Sharing a DisplayHDR tier does not make two monitors identical. The certification sets minimums, but it does not evaluate blooming, exact zone count, uniformity, input lag or firmware behavior across every game. It is a reliable filter rather than a complete review.

Be careful with HDR 400, HDR 600 and similar labels
DisplayHDR and the official logo are the important words. Phrases such as HDR 400, HDR600 or HDR-1000 do not prove certification. A manufacturer may be describing a claimed peak measured through its own method. Check the exact model in VESA's certified products database before assuming that it passed the tests.
DisplayHDR 400 is the entry tier and does not require local dimming zones. It can deliver correct signal handling and color, but the visual step over SDR may be modest in dark scenes. DisplayHDR 600 introduces more useful requirements for an LCD with noticeable HDR, while 1000 adds headroom for strong highlights. For OLED, look for True Black and compare sustained full-screen brightness too.
Gaming buyers must also check refresh rate, inputs and synchronization. Our VRR, G-Sync and FreeSync guide covers the part DisplayHDR does not. A monitor can produce strong HDR and still have a weak VRR range, or the reverse.

The sensible buying rule
If a listing says only HDR10, treat HDR as compatibility rather than a quality guarantee. For an LCD gaming monitor where HDR matters, DisplayHDR 600 is a more useful starting point than 400 when an independent review also confirms light control. On OLED, DisplayHDR True Black and warranty coverage for permanent burn-in matter more than chasing the largest possible nit number.
