The rumor lands just as Anthropic needs to complete the Claude 5 family
Update, July 24: Anthropic has now released the model. Read the confirmed Claude Opus 5 pricing and performance details.
Posts on X point to a possible Claude Opus 5 launch today, July 24. There is no official announcement, but prediction markets are betting on an imminent release.
Sonnet 5 launched on June 30, and Fable 5 and Mythos 5 already exist; Opus officially remains at 4.8. The lineup is conspicuously incomplete—and Opus 4.7's fast mode retires today.
Opus 5 would need to do more than win a few benchmarks
Sonnet 5 already offers a million-token context window and strong agentic coding. A slightly better Opus would be hard to justify.
The new model should own long tasks where Sonnet can still lose precision—and Anthropic must price it so it neither cannibalizes Sonnet nor becomes irrelevant.

Reasons to believe it, reasons to wait
Anthropic ships without endless campaigns—Sonnet 5 appeared with a direct post and immediate availability. But nothing official mentions a new Opus yet.
My bet: Opus 5 is close, though the date is not guaranteed. If the rumor is right, the real bar is whether it makes Sonnet 5 look insufficient.
