Where Claude wins: writing, coding and thinking long
If your work involves words, Claude plays in another league. It writes with a more human tone and less 'robot voice', that plastic finish that gives AI away instantly; for drafting, summarising with judgement or polishing a text so it doesn't sound like a template, it's the one that needs the least fixing. In long-document analysis it holds the thread across hundreds of pages without getting lost, exactly where many drift.
In coding the difference is measurable, not a matter of opinion: it leads the developers' benchmark (64.3% on SWE-bench Pro) and seven in ten programmers prefer it for writing code. And for tasks that aren't just chatting but doing — executing steps, touching files, automating — its approach is ahead. Where ChatGPT wins: images, voice and being the all-rounder
ChatGPT has a card Claude doesn't cover: it generates images. With DALL-E built in, you ask for an illustration and you have it; Claude doesn't draw from scratch, so if fast visuals are your thing, there's no debate here. Its voice mode is also more polished and accessible, and for talking out loud it feels more natural.
But its biggest edge is intangible: it's the all-rounder. It has the largest ecosystem, the app everyone knows and a thousand integrations to hand, so for anyone who isn't sure what they want it for and is after a single tool that does everything reasonably well, ChatGPT is the safe bet. It doesn't win every test, but it almost never leaves you stranded. That, in a market where even Google admits it's behind, is worth a lot.
The verdict: which one we'd keep
Time to take a side, which is why we did the comparison. If you want a single app that also draws, talks and solves anything without thinking, keep ChatGPT: it's the best generalist and the safest choice for most people. But if your thing is serious work with words and code — writing, coding, analysing, automating — which is where real productivity is decided, our bet is Claude, and not by a little.
