A new reason to return without playing ranked
The Viking Sagas arrived for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on September 22. It introduces the Danes, Saxons and Varangians alongside fifteen missions across a three-part campaign. Harald Hardrada’s story gives single-player fans a reason to return that does not depend on learning a new competitive matchup.
The launch announcement lists Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox and PS5. This is an expansion for Definitive Edition, not a standalone game or an Age of Empires IV add-on. Check the base game and storefront you own before purchasing. Our DLC and expansion guide explains why the distinction matters.
What the new civilizations bring
The Steam listing describes a distinct signature unit for each army. Danish Jomsvikings throw torches at buildings and ships. Saxon heavy infantry can start an engagement with a javelin, while the Varangian Jarl throws axes from horseback.
Those tools suggest different targets and ways to open a fight. They do not establish which civilization is strongest after players learn the expansion. Ranking the armies would require actual matches and evidence, not treating the product description as a balance assessment. The official presentation confirms that all three join ranked play.

One ruler connects the campaign
The campaign reveal follows Harald from exile through his struggle for Norway and Denmark, before the bid for England. Eastern journeys and Byzantine territory broaden the route beyond coastal raids. Its fifteen missions use a continuing protagonist to connect those settings.
The developers also describe choices with consequences through each part of the campaign and special hero abilities. Those are announced systems rather than proof of replay value. We have not reviewed the expansion and cannot yet judge mission design or multiplayer balance.
For players who prefer fantasy heroes to historical armies, Warcraft III: Reforged’s Forsaken Kingdom is another recent campaign built around decisions and character progression. The Viking Sagas instead offers more of Age of Empires II’s battles, connected through a continuing story of exile, conquest and ambition.
