Shogun 2 Complete Edition speeds up diplomacy and opens more than 50 minor factions

Total War: Shogun 2 Complete Edition will make it easier to find willing diplomatic partners and play as more than 50 minor factions. Creative Assembly’s September 29 feature reveal sets out the changes coming to the PC release on October 13.

The upgrade is a separate $39.99 purchase. Existing Shogun 2 owners receive the original game’s legacy DLC free, excluding the Blood Pack, but that does not unlock the new edition’s interface, controls or campaign features.

See a deal before opening negotiations

Shogun 2 alternates between managing a clan through turn-based strategy and commanding armies in real-time battles. Quick Deal will show which factions are likely to accept each kind of diplomatic agreement. Picking a deal and a faction then takes the player into the relevant negotiation.

The developer’s change list also adds modern shortcuts for moving and rotating units, plus a high camera view that shows the whole battlefield. More than 50 minor clans gain official playable status across the included campaigns.

Bigger menus, updated graphics

Adjustable interface scaling is designed to keep menus readable on 1440p and 4K displays. The release also updates lighting, textures and shadows. Voice and text languages can be selected separately, allowing Japanese dialogue with English menus.

DLSS Super Resolution and FSR 3.1 are among the graphics options. They reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input, reducing the rendering work needed. Our DLSS and FSR explainer covers the differences. These are announced features, not evidence of a particular frame-rate increase in Shogun 2.

The old game still has a reason to stay installed

Complete Edition does not support mods made for the original Shogun 2. It uses mod.io, while the existing game and its mods remain playable. As our guide to remakes, remasters and reboots explains, the label alone does not tell you what carries over. Here, a favorite old mod may be a reason to keep using the original.

The package contains Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. It launches on Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. A 75% loyalty discount for existing owners runs from October 13 through November 12, according to the official FAQ.

Steam buyers also get the original Shogun 2 and its DLC, apart from the Blood Pack. The other three stores sell Complete Edition alone. The old game stopped being sold separately on Steam on September 28, although existing owners retain access.
