Sony has just given one of its forgotten exclusives a second chance
Rise of the Ronin is now part of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium in Spain. It can be downloaded while it remains in the catalogue.
The game launched in March 2024 beside Dragon's Dogma 2 and vanished from the conversation sooner than it deserved. Now millions of subscribers can try it without paying another €79.99.
It arrives when PlayStation needs its catalogue to feel valuable again
PS Plus Extra has plenty of games, but few monthly additions feel like events. Rise of the Ronin is recent, recognisable and substantial enough to justify weeks of subscription.
Sony may need more moves like this if it does not want first-day releases: shorter gaps between launch and catalogue.
It may be a test for reviving exclusives that never became phenomena
Rise of the Ronin was not a failure, but it never became a symbol of PS5. Plus can increase its audience and restart word of mouth.
Sony may be measuring whether a later catalogue release can move subscriptions before repeating the strategy with other exclusives.
The price is no longer the problem
The catalogue removes the purchase barrier, but not the fight for attention. Rise of the Ronin now only needs players to press download.
With visibility and support from Team Ninja, it could become one of those games that finds its audience late.
