Standard PS5 owners are getting an AI-upscaling option in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony has announced QSSR, with patches planned for October 1, 2026, adding a graphics option in both games. The technology brings this form of image reconstruction to the original console without requiring a PS5 Pro.
Two games, with support delivered through patches
Insomniac says QSSR improves clarity and stability in Wolverine’s environments. Sucker Punch points to fine detail in Ghost of Yōtei’s characters and scenery, with more consistent results from one image to the next. Those are the studios’ assessments of image reconstruction, not measurements showing a higher frame rate.
Sony has not supplied resolution targets, performance figures or patch version numbers in the announcement. It also has not announced a console-wide QSSR setting that changes every PS5 game. Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the two confirmed launch titles.

Making AI reconstruction fit the original PS5
An upscaler reconstructs a higher-resolution output from the image a game renders. A neural network, an AI model trained to process images, helps calculate the reconstructed detail. That differs from creating extra frames between the ones the game renders, a distinction explained in our DLSS, FSR and PSSR guide.
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony says a streamlined network and a PS5-specific implementation make it possible to bring AI upscaling to hardware that could not accommodate PSSR’s computational demands. The announcement does not disclose QSSR’s processing cost or the trade-offs developers must make in each game.
QSSR does not replace PSSR on PS5 Pro
The two technologies share a research partnership. QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s collaboration with AMD, which also produced the upgraded PSSR announced in February. Sony still positions PSSR as its higher-quality option on PS5 Pro. Shared origins do not establish identical results on the two consoles.
PS5 Pro has a separate optional system setting introduced in March for applying upgraded PSSR to games already using PSSR. Our upgraded-PSSR compatibility list covers that Pro feature. Neither the setting nor that list provides a route to enabling QSSR on a standard PS5.
Sony plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers. That opens the way for more integrations, but additional games still need their own support announcements and update details.
