Sony has finally shown off the console plenty of people are going to fall for. On August 11 PlayStation unveiled its Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition lineup, led by a PS5 Digital Edition bundle with a wild yellow design that costs 649.99 dollars. And the tastiest part of the calendar is that it lands on September 15, the same day Insomniac's game begins, so you can break in a new console and a new adventure in one go.
Pre-orders open earlier, on August 19 at 10 AM local time, and it's worth flagging one thing right away, because units are limited and editions like this fly off the shelves. If you've got your eye on it, that's a day to get up early and keep your finger quick.
Two designs signed by Jock, Battle Yellow and Adamantium
The hook is the art, by illustrator Jock, with that grimy, furious linework that fits Wolverine like a glove. There are two finishes. Battle Yellow is the classic yellow and black, with the mutant's face roaring and claw slashes cutting across the shell. Adamantium goes for a metallic silver, more restrained and elegant, for anyone who'd rather not shout quite so loudly. «Jock's illustrations are grounded and raw and perfectly personify Wolverine», boasts Insomniac's Marcus Smith.
What's in the pack and what's sold separately
Pay attention here, because the small print matters. The only bundle with a console is the PS5 Digital Edition in Battle Yellow, for that 649.99 dollars. Everything else is a standalone accessory. The covers for PS5 and PS5 Pro cost 74.99 dollars each, with the Adamantium finish reserved for the Pro, and the DualSense controllers, both yellow and silver, go for 84.99 dollars. In other words, kitting out the full set pushes the final figure up quite a bit.
It's a very Sony move, selling the console on one side and letting you dig into your pocket for everything else. And even so, seeing how those claw slashes look on the yellow, plenty of people will happily line up to pay. If you're not up to speed on the game yet, catch up on everything about Marvel's Wolverine, its date and story, and if the Pro tempts you, first check which games really make the most of its power.
Personally, Battle Yellow strikes me as one of the coolest designs PlayStation has put out in years, the kind you want on display rather than hidden under the TV. The only question is whether your wallet survives the treat right as you also have to buy the game. So which side are you on, furious yellow or elegant silver?
