How to play the Pikmin games in order and the best place to start

The games share characters, but Pikmin 4 rearranges parts of their history. This order helps newcomers without pretending the timeline is settled.

Pikmin 4 is the friendliest entry

The strongest modern starting point is Pikmin 4. Nintendo's official page introduces rescue missions, night expeditions and Oatchi without requiring previous knowledge. Rewind and generous guidance soften the first Dandori lessons.

Starting with the fourth game does not spoil the older adventures. Pikmin 2 directly follows Olimar's return from the first game and Pikmin 3 retains that continuity, while Pikmin 4 redistributes and reinterprets parts of Olimar's history.

Release order

The sequence is Pikmin from 2001, Pikmin 2 from 2004, Pikmin 3 from 2013 and Pikmin 4 from 2023. Pikmin 1+2 brings the first pair to Switch, while Pikmin 3 Deluxe adds missions and co-op.

This route shows the time pressure becoming more flexible as tasks expand. The first is short and tense, the second focuses on caves, the third splits control between captains, and the fourth builds around Oatchi.

Choose by what you want

Pick Pikmin 1 for a compact campaign, Pikmin 2 for caves, Pikmin 3 Deluxe for co-op and Pikmin 4 for variety and accessibility. None demands a hundred-hour commitment.

Current versions work on the newer system. Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy arrives November 12, 2026, and original owners can buy an Upgrade Pack. Our guide to Switch 2 game and controller compatibility and our Switch 2 game selection help confirm support and avoid buying the same game twice.
