Switch 2 Edition, free update or Upgrade Pack: what you are actually buying

All three labels improve Switch games, but they do not include the same things or cost the same. This guide prevents duplicate purchases.

The difference in one sentence

A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundles the original Switch game and its Upgrade Pack in one purchase. An Upgrade Pack adds those features to a compatible copy you already own. Nintendo lists the conditions on its support page.

A free update costs nothing and applies the technical or compatibility changes defined for that game. An Upgrade Pack is a paid add-on, or an included benefit in selected cases, that requires the base game and may add Switch 2 improvements or new content.

What an Upgrade Pack requires

You need access to the compatible base game, physical or digital, plus its specific pack. A cartridge must still be inserted. Buying the upgrade alone does not grant a licence for the game.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack provides temporary access to selected upgrades, including those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The base game and an active membership are required. Access to the upgrade ends with the membership, while ownership of the base game remains unchanged.

When the complete edition makes sense

Buy the full Switch 2 Edition if you do not own the original: it includes the base game and Upgrade Pack. Nintendo says physical releases carry both on the same game card. Existing owners should compare the Upgrade Pack price and verify region, account and copy compatibility.

Our guide to Switch 2 game and controller compatibility and our Switch 2 game selection covers cartridges, accounts and controllers. Save data and DLC do not necessarily move in the same way for every reissue.

How to avoid paying twice

Open the eShop with the owning account, visit the game's page and check the Upgrade Pack price. Then look for a free update or a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit. A physical Switch 2 Edition does contain both the base game and upgrade on the same card.
