The short answer
You do not need to play every game in order. Nintendo presents Definitive Edition as a celebration of Zelda eras. Age of Calamity begins one hundred years before Breath of the Wild, but time travel creates an alternative branch. Age of Imprisonment tells the Imprisoning War from Tears of the Kingdom's past.
Start with the Zelda game connected to the Warriors entry that interests you. Continuity across all three is secondary, and each game teaches its combat systems from scratch.
Release order
The sequence is Hyrule Warriors in 2014, its Switch Definitive Edition in 2018, Age of Calamity in 2020 and Age of Imprisonment in 2025. Age of Calamity's Switch 2 Definitive Edition arrives on February 25, 2027 with the Expansion Pass, save transfer and a digital discount for owners.
Release order shows how camera, objectives and character abilities improve. It is not required for the story because the first game combines eras while the two later entries occupy separate continuities.
Which one should you choose?
Definitive Edition wins on characters and maps. Age of Calamity is the best entry for fans of Link, Zelda and the Champions from Breath of the Wild. Age of Imprisonment suits players who want newer combat and know Tears of the Kingdom.
Check Switch 2 game and controller compatibility and our Switch 2 game selection before choosing a version. A Switch 2 label does not always mean you need to buy the whole game again.

Play Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity, Tears of the Kingdom and Age of Imprisonment. Save the original Hyrule Warriors for when you want a playable Zelda museum rather than a clean chronology.
