GTA 6's boxed PS5 code is region locked: be careful when importing it

Rockstar confirms that the code inside the physical PlayStation edition must match your account region. Xbox codes have no such restriction.

The PS5 box contains no disc, and its code will not work on every account

Anyone considering an imported copy of GTA 6 for a different cover, a better price or a travel purchase should be careful with the PlayStation 5 edition. Rockstar has confirmed that the code included in the box is region locked and can only be redeemed by a PlayStation Network account from the same country group.

The restriction appears on Rockstar's official support page. The so-called physical edition is a box containing a download code rather than a disc. On PS5, that code belongs to the region where the copy was issued. Rockstar explicitly says Xbox Series X|S codes are not region locked.

It will not affect somebody buying from their local store, but it matters to a huge import market. GTA 6 will have localized covers, regional promotions and millions of buyers looking for the cheapest edition. Comparing prices is no longer enough on PS5; the small print on the box matters too.

A US copy will not redeem on a Spanish account

Spain sits inside Rockstar's “Rest of EMEA and Asia” group alongside countries including Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Australia and India. The United States, Canada and much of Latin America belong to the Americas group, while Japan has separate codes.

A box purchased in the US therefore cannot be redeemed on a Spanish PSN account. Changing a menu setting will not solve it because PlayStation does not allow users to switch the country of an existing account. Creating a second compatible account may work, but that is an unnecessary complication for an already expensive purchase.

Xbox buyers do not need to inspect the country label. Rockstar describes those codes as region free, a meaningful difference for collectors, importers and anyone buying a deal abroad.

Japan has another catch: the code expires

The Japanese edition adds an even stranger condition. Documentation reported by VGC says its digital codes expire 170 days after issuance. A sealed Japanese copy may preserve the box but not necessarily access to the game if somebody opens and redeems it too late.

Rockstar lists no equivalent expiry for other regions. Even so, it exposes the weakness of a physical edition that contains no disc. The box can survive for decades; access depends on a code, a compatible account and the servers required to download it.

What to check before buying a boxed copy of GTA 6

The practical rule is simple: on PS5, buy a version intended for the same region as your account. Spanish accounts need a European copy or one included in Rockstar's matching regional group. On Xbox, the code can be redeemed regardless of where the box was purchased.

Codes on both consoles can be redeemed from November 12 to preload the game before its November 19, 2026 release. The details now sit in our 2026 release guide and our coverage of consoles, purchases and subscriptions.

It is not Rockstar's most exciting announcement, but it is exactly the kind of detail that can ruin a purchase months later. If you plan to import GTA 6 or give it as a gift, check the region before paying. On PlayStation, the right box matters as much as the right console.
