Google has opened a worldwide Gemini offer for college students, but it is not the same subscription everywhere. Eligible students in the United States receive 12 months of Google AI Pro. Spain and more than 140 other markets get Google AI Plus instead.
Both plans cost nothing for the first year. Both also require enrolment verification, a personal Google account and a valid payment method, and both start charging automatically when that year ends unless they are cancelled.
The offer can be claimed until 31 December 2026. The clock begins on activation day, so somebody joining in December still receives a full 12 months rather than a few days of access.
Outside the US, the free plan is AI Plus
Google AI Plus comes with 400GB of storage, Gemini Omni and usage limits twice as high as those available without an AI subscription. Google's Spanish student page also promises unlimited uploads of class material to study notebooks and Gemini Live, including visual material.
Spain makes the value unusually easy to calculate: AI Plus currently costs €4.99 a month, so the free year is worth €59.88 at today's price. It is generous, although it is a step below Spain's 2025 promotion, when Google offered students AI Pro with 2TB.

Do not miss the renewal line. In Spain, Google says AI Plus will charge €4.99 per month once the promotion ends unless it is cancelled. Other countries use their local standard price, which is displayed before checkout.
US students get four times the limits and 5TB
The US promotion supplies Google AI Pro, normally $19.99 a month. It raises Gemini limits fourfold and includes 5TB, Gemini Spark and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs. The announcement also lists Google Health Premium, although Google's help says recurring add-ons are unavailable with student offers; I would not count it until signup confirms it.
That split comes directly from Google's global announcement, not a translation error. The international Plus offer covers over 140 markets but excludes Albania, Bolivia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia as well as the US, which has its own Pro deal.
Google also advertises paid student discounts on Pro and a Pro plus YouTube Premium bundle. Those are separate offers that can continue with yearly student verification for up to four years; they are not the same as this one-year free plan.

- Both: SheerID verification, a payment card and automatic renewal unless cancelled.
Eligibility, deadline and the school-account catch
Applicants must be enrolled in higher education and pass SheerID verification with a valid school email. The minimum age depends on location; Spain's page requires students to be over 18. The school address proves eligibility, but the subscription itself must sit on a personal Google Account, not a university-managed Workspace for Education account.
A valid payment method is mandatory. Supervised and business accounts, third-party or Google Fi subscriptions, discounted Pixel bundles and members of a Google family group are also excluded. Google's student-offer help page lists the signup route and restrictions.
There is a documentation wrinkle. Google's general help says some current members may qualify, while the offer terms updated on 19 August exclude anyone with an active Google One subscription. Let the final signup screen decide before cancelling an existing plan.
Claiming closes on 31 December, but the benefit lasts for 12 months from activation. Set a reminder for month eleven. Falling back to the free 15GB allowance while over quota does not erase content immediately, but it blocks new Drive uploads, Gmail mail and Photos backups; after two years over quota, Google may delete content with advance warning.
- Open the student offer with the personal account you want to keep.
- Verify enrolment through SheerID and your institution email.
- Add payment details, confirm the renewal date and save the confirmation.
- Cancel before the year ends if you do not want the standard monthly charge.
The new study tools are not all paywalled
The subscription raises allowances, but Google's new learning features are rolling out to every Gemini user. The student hub collects study notebooks, flashcards and practice quizzes. Upload a syllabus and a notebook can identify gaps, build short lessons and track progress; Calendar deadline imports are also coming with the user's permission.
Interactive visualisations can build tables, graphs and working 3D simulations for a question. Gemini Live is gaining asynchronous Deep Research: start a report, lock the phone and return when a notification says it is ready to discuss by voice.
None of this turns an AI answer into evidence. Notebooks make it easier to return to source material and research reports provide links, but academic claims still need checking. Plus buys more attempts and more context, not judgement.
