A short campaign instead of one loose mission

Fatshark will release Depths of the Damned on September 29 as a free Warhammer 40,000: Darktide update. Its centerpiece is a mini campaign linking several operations and ending in Spillway, a new level beneath Tertium.

The squad will enter Water Cartel tunnels while hunting the Prophet of Decay, a powerful Psyker building a following among the ruins. This is not a standalone expansion or a separate purchase. It becomes part of the base game.

Some missions will include alternate routes. That matters in Darktide because a fork can change sightlines, horde entry points and the amount of room available when a teammate goes down, rather than merely adding another corridor.

Three new families and three new marks

The update adds six weapons, although the number needs context. Three are new families: the Ogryn Cruncher, Huntsman's Shotgun and Ogryn Thugshot. Three more are new marks within existing families: the Krourk Mk VII Crusher, Krourk Mk IV Double-Barrelled Shotgun and Gromm Mk I Battle Maul paired with a Mk V Slab Shield.

The selection gives the Ogryn more choices for close-range pressure, control and defense. It is too early to say what will dominate the highest difficulty. Final stats and September 29 balance changes will determine whether they become durable alternatives or one-week novelties.

Fatshark will pair the content with a limited event, store rotation and quality-of-life changes. Patch 1.12.0 also landed on September 14, so returning players should read those notes before judging the new build against an old memory.

Why this format suits Darktide

Darktide's cooperative chaos works best when it has a clear direction. A short chain with an antagonist, progression and finale can provide more context than one more mission dropped into a long menu, while remaining replayable for loot and difficulty afterward.

The Prophet of Decay is the important unknown. A Psyker boss creates room to break from the familiar high-health brute, making a team read the arena, divide objectives or answer ranged threats. Fatshark has not explained the entire fight, which is probably for the best. Its date also lands beside several releases in our guide to September's best games.

September 29 will show whether the routes meaningfully change runs and whether the weapons find a lasting role. PC players should remember that a large patch may rebuild caches and create temporary stutter. Our shader compilation guide helps separate that from a persistent performance problem.
