Claude Opus 5.5 cuts prices and earns promising early reactions, with caveats

A 20% price cut is not the same as 40% cheaper work

Released on September 22, Claude Opus 5.5 charges $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens through the API. Those rates are 20% below Opus 5’s $5 and $25. Anthropic’s developer documentation lists availability through its API, AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft’s platforms.

Anthropic also claims a 40% reduction in cost per task. That combines lower rates with fewer tokens needed to finish the work. It is a task-dependent claim, not a promise that every customer’s bill will fall by 40%.

Count the attempts, not just the token rate

A coding agent may read files, attempt a fix and inspect the result several times. Those turns all consume tokens. Anthropic’s cost guide explains why a lower rate can still produce a larger bill if the model keeps pursuing the wrong solution.

Against Opus 5, the useful comparison therefore includes retries and the final result. API developers should also check their settings, since Opus 5.5 keeps adaptive thinking enabled rather than allowing it to be switched off. Changing the model name alone is not a complete migration.

The company’s launch benchmarks report progress across several tasks, not a clean sweep. Anthropic itself cautions that small benchmark gaps are becoming less helpful as a guide to real work. The scores do not remove the need to review the output.

What early users like, and where they disagree

In an early r/Anthropic thread, a user converting old courses into a modern web format singles out speed. Another describes more rigorous work overall, but says bugs remain, including less obvious mistakes. That is a more informative picture than the most enthusiastic comment alone.
