ChatGPT can now open in a sidebar inside Microsoft Word. OpenAI says the add-in is available across every ChatGPT plan, including Free. It can work with the document already open instead of forcing users to move each passage into a separate conversation.
The integration can turn notes into a first draft, summarize a file, revise selected text and reorganize headings, numbering or formatting. Word joins Excel and PowerPoint in the same ChatGPT Microsoft add-in. It does not replace a Microsoft 365 license: users still need a compatible version of Word and permission to install add-ins.
What changes when editing a document
The practical difference is context. Select a paragraph and ask for a version aimed at a different audience, and ChatGPT knows which passage should change. For larger revisions, OpenAI's usage guide recommends asking for an outline or an explanation of the proposed edits first. That makes it possible to review the direction before altering twenty pages at once.

Permissions matter for workplace files. ChatGPT administrators can disable Word, and Microsoft 365 administrators must allow the add-in. OpenAI says data handling follows the controls attached to the plan and workspace used to sign in.
How to install it and which limits apply
Installation starts in Microsoft Marketplace. Add ChatGPT, open it from Word's ribbon and sign in. Availability on Free does not mean unlimited use. Free, Plus and Pro retain their plan usage limits, and OpenAI does not list a separate installation fee for Word. Plans with a shared premium allowance count Word usage alongside Codex and other included features.
Business and Enterprise use credits based on the selected model and token consumption. OpenAI lists a GPT-5.6 Sol free preview in Word through September 30, with its rate card covering usage after that period. Organizations should decide which files it may access and who validates changes before enabling it broadly. The add-in is most useful for people who already live in Word and lose time moving text between windows. Its strongest role is accelerating well-defined edits while leaving the final judgment in the document.
