Ibai stopped La Velada to hug Gaspi's mother, and she corrected the motto on her son's robe

La Velada del Año is a machine built never to stop. A full stadium, fight after fight, concerts wedged between bouts, sponsors who paid for their minute and a peak audience that again came close to eight million concurrent viewers. Everything is timed, even the pauses. Which is why what happened on Saturday 25 July at La Cartuja stood out so much: Ibai Llanos stopped the clock.

Michelle Díaz walked out on stage, mother of Gaspar Prim Díaz, Gaspi, killed on 14 June at 23 when two helicopters collided in mid-air over Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the west of Rio de Janeiro. Ibai hugged her in front of the whole stadium. The screens rolled a video with his family and with him talking. And La Cartuja started chanting his name, which is the only way a stadium knows how to say anything.

But the best detail was not on stage. The gloves Gaspi fought in at La Velada del Año V had been sitting on the commentary desk all night, next to Ibai's mic. No close-up, no caption, no piano underneath. They were just there. Whoever saw them, saw them.

What the robe says, and what his mother said back

Michelle came out holding her son's boxing robe, the one from that night in 2025. Written on it is the motto Gaspi introduced himself to the world with: "Give without being given to". She held it up and, as La República reported, said this:

"I wanted to leave you with this: Gaspi's robe says 'Give without being given to'. And it seems to me, weighing things up, that it is better to give and to be given to as well, to be given all this affection and this friendship that you give every day."

Then came the line that was really aimed at the stands: "Look after each other, young people, and respect each other, respect your fathers and your mothers."

A mother correcting, live, in front of seventy thousand people, the motto her son wore on his work clothes. It is the most honest thing anyone has ever said at a Velada, and I have watched all six. She was not asking the crowd for anything. She was handing them back a different idea from the one the man being honoured had defended.

Who the kid with the tape-wrapped microphone actually was

If the fight is all you know him for, some context helps. Gaspi was born on 28 December 2002 in Argentina and reached three million YouTube subscribers and 2.8 million Instagram followers doing the one thing that supposedly does not scale: standing on an ordinary street with a black microphone wrapped in electrical tape and talking to whoever walked past.

No studio, no marquee guests, no imported format. A ragged voice, patience, and a way of asking that got strangers to say things in three minutes they would not say to their own families. He stepped away for a while over his mental health and came back in 2024. Eight months before he died he released a documentary about his own life that he called "probably one of the most important videos of my life".

In 2025 he climbed into the ring at La Velada V against Perxitaa and lost. Losing there hardly matters; being there does. That is why the gloves belonged on that desk rather than behind glass.

Six people died in the crash. With him were Lucas Vignale, the Argentine producer who worked alongside him throughout his career and who was also named on Saturday, and the American singer Oliver Tree. The ANAC and CENIPA investigation remains open and no cause has been established.

The tribute that works is the one you never repeat

Here is the uncomfortable part, because this came off by a whisker. La Velada is a product: every second is monetised and every emotion has a clip queued up for the next morning. A tribute inside that machinery can very easily become one more segment, with its video transition and its swelling strings, and at that point it honours nobody.

It did not, because it was short, because the script was invisible, and because the person who spoke was not in the business. Ibai said only what was needed — that Gaspi was, "besides a personal friend and a great content creator", someone who had been there the year before — and got out of the way. Infobae carried his words almost unadorned, and that flat tone explains a lot about why the moment held.

My bet, signed and dated: at La Velada del Año VII next summer there will be no tribute to Gaspi. And that will be the right call. Repeating it would turn it into a fixed segment, and a fixed segment is the exact opposite of what happened on Saturday.
